Can raw 23andMe data reveal health risks?
Direct answer: Yes. A 23andMe raw file contains genotype calls at selected positions, and some have health-related evidence. Careful third-party analysis can surface supported risk, carrier, trait, or medication-response context. It is not the same as an official 23andMe Health report, does not cover every relevant variant, and cannot diagnose a condition.
23andMe describes the export as raw, uninterpreted genotype data from predetermined positions. It says only a subset of markers has been individually validated for accuracy and that the raw-data feature is for informational—not medical or diagnostic—use. A responsible third-party service must normalize the reference build and strand before matching the markers it actually sees.
The official 23andMe Health Service is a separate product with its own selected health-predisposition, carrier-status, wellness, and pharmacogenetics reports. Availability depends on the purchased service and chip version. A DNA Layer report is an independent interpretation of supported markers in the exported file; it does not recreate or extend an official 23andMe report.
